Walter Jaoko is a Professor of Medical Microbiology and Tropical Medicine, and Director of KAVI-Institute of Clinical Research, at the University of Nairobi. He is also an Extraordinary Professor of Medicine at Stellenbosch University at the Centre for Bioethics and Law in the Department of Medicine, and an Adjunct Professor, School of Public Health, University of Alabama at Birmingham. He trained at the School of Medicine at the University of Nairobi, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, and Stellenbosch University. He has conducted research in various aspects of infectious diseases transmission, treatment and control for the past 30 years, publishing over 200 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals. He has a keen interest in health research ethics, and promotion of ethical standards in the conduct of health research in developing countries. In this regard, he has facilitated research ethics training to members of ethics committees in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Botswana. He is a member of Strathmore University Research Ethics Committee.
